Warning! Art purchase scam

Dear folks,
Yesterday I received an email from a man saying he lives in NJ and saw some of my work online (your work may be seen on gallery sites, etc. as well).  He was interested in purchasing 2 pieces - asap, and wanted to know prices and sizes.  I responded with the info and he emailed immediately, saying he would send me a certified check..."and don't worry about packig or shipping i have my own shipper who will get them and give you a chek."

Something did not feel right - you know how intuitive we artists are - so I went online to see what info could be found on purchasing paintings and recent scams.  His emails to me fit right into the given examples:

1)  His grammar was very bad, along with his punctuation.
2)  He wanted to complete the transaction "asap."  This term was used frequently!
3)  He has his own shipper who will take care of everything upon your receipt of his check.
4)  He flatters you with praise for your work and knows it will be lovely in his new, "abode, apartment, or recently built home, etc."

According to info online, the check will take up to a month to process completely and is bogus.  Meanwhile, your work is gone.  You will have no address or paper trail.  Another variation is that the shipper gives you a check and it's written for far too much.  The buyer apologizes for the mistake and asks you to keep what's due to you, sending them the overage.  By the time the check bounces, you've sent them a large amount of money.

According to online info, scams involving artists are rampant.  Lack of sales and flattery, plus a nice check (and no worry about shipping!) are almost irresistible.  Some have reported it to the FBI and BBB, but with poor results.  We need to be on our toes!

Please pass this on to your classes, membership and fellow artists.
