ARTWORK SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Because your design will be turned into our official Paddle To The Sea 2010 t-shirt, please take care to follow these guidelines to insure your design will look impeccable on our shirts. Your artwork may be provided in either of the following formats.

Digital artwork
Images created in Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Freehand, Adobe Acrobat Reader, are preferred by t-shirt printers over mechanical and hand-drawn artwork for quality of the end result and efficiency. If your digital artwork file ends with any of these suffixes, it can be used to properly prepare your art:.ai, .bmp, .eps, .gif, .pct, .pdf, .psd, .tiff. The standard resolution for artwork is 300 dpi (dots per inch).

Hand-drawn artwork
A logo that's been drawn by hand is a great starting point, but it will need to be digitized and modified for practical use. Artwork can be supplied on a sheet of white paper, and should be no larger than 8.5" x 11" as it will require scanning and being brought it into a graphic program. If you choose to mail a hand-drawn design to our San Francisco office please take care to ensure your piece will not be bent or damaged in the mail.

Please send any questions to Karyn Barnes at karyn@tuolumne.org or call (415) 882-7252 ext. 304.

Interaction : collaboration

An exhibition by sibling artists Troy and Kelly Viss
January 4, 2010 — February 28, 2010 | Reception: Tuesday, February 9, 2010 : 8:00 PM

Turlock City Gallery, City Hall
156 S. Broadway, Turlock CA
8am - 5pm Monday through Friday and during public meetings
Hr Inline
Kelly-Viss Hollinger and Troy Viss are landscape painters who share a preoccupation with natural light. Residents of Turlock, their work often includes reference to the landscape of the San Joaquin Valley.
At the heart of their paintings is "the intent to create art that people will want to live with, visit often, and rediscover at varying degrees of distance and resolution."
Kelly and Troy come from a family where artistic expression was inspired, encouraged, and always complimented. As they grew up and took different career paths, each has developed their own signature style; Kelly's is layered and meditative, Troy's is filled with delicate colors and bold brush strokes.
Hr
Kelly is clearly at ease with the landscape tradition, making it her vehicle for studies in light and color. Upon further observation the viewer becomes aware of the dichotomy created between the bucolic depiction and the gritty finish. The imagery is tranquil or exultant; the surface: dripped and stained. The overall affect is arresting in its reverence for both nature and visual experience.

Hr
Troy's ambitious works reference abstract and interpretive ideas of time, place, and memory. His paintings alternate between peaceful and energetic, some resonating with tranquility while others practically dance in front of you. Troy employs transparent layers of oil and varnish in a process that includes wet-on-wet painting and scraping to reveal underlying composition and create additional dimension and texture, inviting the viewer to look beyond the surface and see what lies below.

INTRODUCING LYNN GORDON: A COLLABORATION

The Turlock exhibition represents a landmark event for the artists as they present works made independently, along with their first collection of works produced collaboratively under the persona “Lynn Gordon”.
In this joint effort, Kelly [LYNN] Viss and Troy [GORDON] Viss challenge the notion of the artist as loner, an individual toiling in solitude—replacing it with a vision for creative partnership and community. The work produced is unique in its origin and sensibility. Sibling artistic precedents of note include Augustus John and Gwen John who also worked independently, and more recently the Chapman brothers and the Starn twins who make artworks collaboratively.
The collaborative paintings in this exhibition are inspired by local culture and history, with the artists’ appreciation for the community that has played a significant part in shaping their personal and professional lives. As Jackson Pollock said, “Every good painter paints what he is.”

Call for Artists - Mariposa Mini Show

Greetings everyone! The Sierra Artists Gallery in Mariposa will be having
its Mini Show this year. In case you weren't aware of this, Elizabeth
Specht, the person who had been almost literally putting on the show
single-handedly over the past ten or so years, passed away last summer. The
gallery members were then unsure if we wanted to do this ourselves, or put
on some other type of show in its place. So with much discussion and soul
searching, we decided to go ahead and do it, but with some modifications.
The dates are similar to what they've always been, scheduled to coincide
with the Storytelling Festival in Mariposa. If you have any questions,
please call either me or Carol Sill, our numbers are on the attached entry
form.

Thanks, and hope to see you soon!

Local 2010 Census Kick-Off
Focused on Diversity
City of Modesto and Stanislaus County host community kick-off event
Modesto, CA – The City of Modesto and Stanislaus County are partnering with the U.S. Census Bureau to achieve a complete and accurate count of the U.S. population in 2010. The partnership is part of a collaborative effort to have an accurate local count during the 2010 Census.
The government agencies are sponsoring a community kick off event on January 26, 2010 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the outdoor plaza of the City/County Administration Building at 1010 Tenth Street in Modesto.
The event will begin with music at 10:30 a.m., with the formal event starting at 11 a.m. featuring speakers representing a variety of what have traditionally been “hard-to-reach” community populations. Speakers will represent the African-American, Latino, Arabic, southeast Asian communities, youth and more.

Also featured will be Arturo Vargas (invited), the Executive Director of NALEO Educational Fund. NALEO is the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials and is the non-partisan leadership organization of the nation’s more than 6000 elected and appointed Latino officials.

“Having a complete count of the City of Modesto and its surrounding communities is vital to preserving and protecting important federal funding,” stated Modesto Mayor Jim Ridenour. “As the largest city in the community, Modesto is honored to lead this effort locally.”
“We’re pleased to partner with our local cities, community-based organizations and all involved organizations in promoting a complete count of the community,” stated Jeff Grover, chairman of the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors. “Working together will lead to better results.”
Other speakers at the event will include Ruby Kennedy (King-Kennedy Board of Directors), Reverand Nathaniel Green (representing the faith community), Sal Yang (Hmong Association), Chay Khun (Watt Cambodian Temple), Jim Christiansen (Peer Art Recovery Project), Andrew Silva (Project Uplift).

Entertainment will be provided by the Modesto High School Quartertet and dj Frank Johnson.

If people would like to call to get involved with the local census, contact Larry Sanchez with the City of Modesto at (209) 571-5580.
Locations of the US Census Questionnaire Assistance Centers will be announced at the event and information tables for the public will be staffed by various agencies with census-related materials.
